This Sunday, 26 January 2025, Maastricht will be buzzing with energy during the 29th edition of Zweit Veur Leid, the oldest charity run in the Benelux. Every year, this special event attracts thousands of participants who run or walk to raise money against poverty. As in previous years, Tapijn Maastricht, the former barracks building that is now an event location, provides the setting for the start and finish. At the time of writing, more than 43,000 euros have already been raised thanks to over 1,100 donations!
Zweit Veur Leid has a rich tradition. What started in 1996 as a local benefit run has grown into one of the best-known charity events in Maastricht and the surrounding area. Every year, participants dedicate themselves to a different local charity. This year, the proceeds are dedicated to primary school Het Mozaïek in the Caberg neighbourhood.
The choice of this goal stems from a worrying reality that demands increasing attention: the increase in children going to school on an empty stomach. This led the board of Zweit Veur Leid to commit several years to realise a new kitchen for a primary school in Maastricht. This year, primary school Het Mozaïek in the Caberg district was chosen. This will provide a structural solution to provide children with healthy meals every day, something essential for their well-being and development. All participating runners raise money to contribute to this initiative.
Tapijn is the setting for start and finish this year, and that is no accidental choice. The former dining hall of the barracks site has been transformed into a vibrant event venue in the heart of the City Park, right next to the university buildings. This venue acts as a central meeting place for participants and audience. People along the side can enjoy not only the efforts of the participants, but also performances by DJ Marvin and Frans Theunisz.
